Tesla Will Open 3,500 Existing And New 250 Kw Chargers For Other Brands Of Electric Vehicles
In breaking live news, Tesla agreed to open its Supercharger network to other EV models and manufacturers in the United States. With this move, Tesla will qualify for a portion of the billions of federal dollars that are earmarked to develop a national network of EV chargers.
EVs charge in 30 minutes using Tesla superchargers
At present, other EVs are facing a shortage of superchargers on US highways. According to a communiqué from the White House on Wednesday, Tesla will open its 3,500 existing and new 250 KW chargers by the end of next year to drivers of all models. It takes 30 minutes to completely charge a vehicle using Tesla superchargers along the highways in the US. The presence of faster EV chargers along the highways improves the adoption of EVs and encourages automakers to quickly convert their fleets to EVs.
In the United States, Tesla controls 17,700 superchargers
Tesla has over 17,700 superchargers in the United States, spread across more than 1,650 locations. However, these are not available for other electric vehicles in the US. The Tesla charger network is reliable and well-known to drivers in the US. According to a US news release, Tesla will triple its superchargers in the US.
Mitch Landrieu, White House Infrastructure Coordinator, stated Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, took part in a discussion in 2022 in a meeting attended by administration officials and other executives to improve charging infrastructure on highways. He further claimed Musk was constructive and open and agreed to make the charging network interoperable.
Tesla seeks public funding
According to Mr. Musk, starting in 2021, Tesla will allow other EVs to use its charger network. However, he has not divulged the details. Tesla sought public funding in Texas and California, according to the regulatory filings. If the funding is granted, Tesla would need to open its charging network, which will be built using public money, to other EVs. In the EU, the company has already launched a pilot program that allows other EVs to use its charging network.
The new chargers will be built as part of a larger push by the Biden administration in the US. It ensures clean energy production in the US. Automakers seeking government funding need to do the final assembly of chargers and the production of housing or steel or iron charger enclosures in the US on an immediate basis. According to the most recent breaking news, automakers must ensure that 55% of the cost of component production is in the United States by July 2024.
The government funding for EV chargers in the infrastructure law enacted in 2021 and the approval of tax credits in 2022 as part of the Inflation Reduction Act prompted a lot of investment from private players in the industry. However, Musk reacted to the new law and said government funding is not necessary for EV charging. According to a Tweet from the CEO of Tesla, Musk was not invited to the automakers’ conference at the White House in 2021.
States will receive $5 billion in funding for EV chargers
The states have already started receiving $5 billion in funding from the federal government to establish highway EV chargers. The Federal Government will soon release a grant of $700 million as the first tranche of the planned discretionary grant of $2.5 billion, which is offered for establishing chargers in schools, apartments, stores, etc.
